Spent 3 nights in Valladolid which is a great base for doing Chichen Itza and much less touristy than the coast. The area is famous for its cenotes (sink holes) and we swam in a couple of them - the first an amazing underground cave with a deep pool at the bottom of which now lies Jon´s wedding ring :(
The second was more developed and was in a hotel complex but was still incredible to see and swim in ... and not as cold as you´d imagine!
We were about half an hour from Chichen Itza so managed to get there about 9.30am before all the big tour buses arrived. The site is huge - but no one seems to know exactly what it was used for and whether the Maya lived there or just came there for ceremonial occasions. The highlight is El Castillo - the enormous pyramid with steps which signify the Mayan calendar. Up until recently visitors were allowed to climb it but they have closed it off now - which is why all of our photos show no people on it!
